What is it about?

This study explores how young people think employers should support environmental sustainability through their people management practices. We surveyed 194 university students from Generation Z about five areas: hiring, training, performance assessment, rewards, and employee participation. Participants rated all five areas as very important. Opportunities to participate in environmental initiatives and receive environmental training received the highest average ratings, although the differences between the five areas were small.

Why is it important?

Understanding the expectations of future employees can help organisations build workplaces that support environmental responsibility. The findings suggest that employers should give young people opportunities to learn practical environmental skills, contribute ideas, and participate in sustainability activities. Organisations can apply these insights by providing training on reducing waste and conserving resources, involving employees in environmental projects, and recognising their contributions. Because the study examined students’ views, it does not establish whether these practices improve workplace behaviour or environmental performance.

Perspectives

As researchers and educators, we see young people as potential contributors to more sustainable workplaces. Their views remind us that environmental responsibility needs to be reflected in everyday decisions about how people are recruited, developed, supported, and recognised. For us, the most useful message is the value participants placed on learning and involvement. Giving future employees the skills and opportunities to contribute offers a practical starting point for organisations seeking to turn environmental commitments into everyday action.
