Why is it important?

In some cases the accessory spleen can rupture, undergo torsion or be the cause of misdiagnosis. It is also important during splenectomy since the accessory spleen is functional. Therefore if a patient undergoes splenectomy the surgeon should be aware of this possible anomaly.

Perspectives

Anatomical anomalies and variation are crucial in surgical and diagnostic procedures.
