What is it about?

This article explores criticisms directed at anthropology by some of the people anthropologists have studied. It assesses the extent to which those criticisms are justified and suggests responses to those that are not.

Why is it important?

Cultural anthropology is, above all, the exploration of diverse perspectives on the world, and that includes coming to terms with the understandings of those who have reservations about anthropology, itself. Moreover, for anthropologists to do our job , we must have a relationship of cooperation and trust with the people we study. Therefore, it is essential for us to understand their criticisms and respond constructively.
