What is it about?

This study examined what factors are linked to suicidal thoughts or attempts in a sample of women who had experienced sexual assault. Factors considered included past child sexual abuse, self-blame, and using substances to cope. In terms of demographics, younger, minority, and bisexual survivors reported greater suicidal ideation relative to other survivors. The researchers found that depression was related to suicidal behavior, but this link weakened when social support and other variables were considered. Women who blamed themselves for the assault or used alcohol or drugs to cope had a higher risk of suicidal thoughts. Those who received help or information support were less likely to have these thoughts. More traumas, drug use, and disclosure of assault related to more suicide attempts, but perceived control over recovery was related to fewer attempts. This research shows that how survivors think about themselves and how they cope matters for risk of suicide. It also highlights how helpful support can reduce that risk. Addressing self-blame and substance use, and increasing positive support, could save lives.

Why is it important?

The findings reveal that self-blame and using substances to cope are key predictors of suicidal ideation in women survivors of sexual assault, while receiving informational or emotional support reduces risk. Highlighting these pathways advances understanding of survivors’ mental health needs. Enhancing support systems and interventions that reduce self-blame and unhealthy coping may prevent suicidal thoughts and attempts. These insights can help shape policies and clinical programs to better support survivors’ psychological recovery and reduce preventable harm.
