What is it about?
Manufacturing systems depend on well-engineered, highly-reliable plans to ensure the quality and dependability we rely on. Future manufacturing systems will be very different from today's systems supporting things such as mass customization of products. Standards are the basis on which reliability is created. Standards also support the integration of component parts and component software into whole systems, allowing for specialization of labor where each participant can perfect their own contributions. The standards necessary to support these future systems are evolving. This paper identifies the foundations for future standards and reviews a body of work on which those future standards will be built.
