A Literature Review of Bitumen Aging: From Laboratory Procedures to Field Evaluation

What is it about?

This paper presents an in-depth review of the relevant literature on the aging phenomenon of unmodified bitumen—one of the main factors behind pavement distresses. In addition to the classic and innovative accelerated laboratory aging procedures, this work also presents and discusses some of the main failure criteria for bitumen that reflect poor pavement performance. A better understanding of bitumen aging is of utmost importance for not only tailoring longer-lasting roads but also developing more effective maintenance strategies.
