What is it about?

Steel slag is a by-product of steel industry. This aggregate-like material has satisfactory mechanical properties, however, environmental challenges such as alkaline pH and trace metal leaching potential need to be overcome as well. This paper investigates the behavior if steel slag is mixed with water treatment residual, a by-product of water plants, under different pH conditions.

Why is it important?

Even if there are numerous studies regarding the mechanical properties of steel slag, there is limited literature available regarding the environmental impacts of its utilization. Mixing steel slag with water treatment residual allows the environmental challenges mentioned above to be eliminated, hence making steel slag a suitable material for use in highway embankments, retaining wall backfills etc.
