Deriving New Medicines from Natural Sources

What is it about?

This paper summarises the talks that were given at the 2nd annual conference of the Society for Scientific Advancement (SoSA) held in 2013. There were three main topics: the human genome, stem cell therapy and the latest results of Caribbean scientists working to identify new drugs from plants in the region. There was also a symposium that identified obstacles to doing research in the Caribbean. This data was later used to begin to implement practical solutions.

Why is it important?

This paper documents one of the many attempts of SoSA to stimulate & facilitate changes in the way research is done in the region. One of the ways SoSA does this is by deliberately hosting conferences in the Caribbean featuring eminent scientists from around the world to make it easier for Caribbean scientists to attend these events. Additionally, the symposium was used not as a talk shop but a springboard to begin to effect changes that should make it easier to do research in the region.
