What is it about?
A significant role of metal ions, especially iron, in human body is well known. Recent advances in understanding the role of iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cell death suggest new therapeutic approaches to treat cancer and other diseases. In addition, metal ions can affect chemical properties (e.g. antioxidant or pro-oxidant activity) of various biomolecules, drugs and vitamins. We have shown that the processes of ROS generation can be stimulated by quinones-chelators.

Why is it important?

Perspectives
We suppose that our results might be important for designing new anticancer compounds, which will be active not only in the ‘dark’ conditions but also for photodynamic therapy, which is now regarded as one of the most promising therapies of selected cancer diseases.
