What is it about?
Abstract: The treatment of 3-O-acetyl-1,2-O-isopropylidene- 4,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-β-d-fructopyranose with sodium methoxide led to the crystalline epoxy-sugar 3,4-anhydro-1,2-O-isopropylidene-5-O-methanesulfonyl-β- d-tagatopyranose, the structure of which was determined by X-ray diffraction. Solvolysis of the epoxide with methanolic hydrogen chloride and subsequent mesylation gave methyl 4-chloro-4-deoxy-1,3,5-tri-O-methanesulfonyl-β-dfructopyranoside which was also characterized by X-ray structure determination.
