Why is it important?

In the early years of the Republic, the German academics who migrated to Turkey, is considered to play a very important role during the creation of the modern secular university in Turkey. In 1936, these immigrant scientists were two-thirds of the teaching staff at Istanbul University; sixteen doctors were also appointed as director of medical faculties and clinics. During this period, three well-known biochemistry scholars, Werner Lipschitz, Felix Haurowitz and Zdenko Stary were accepted into the Biochemistry Institute of Istanbul University, and each one of these scientists became the head of this institute respectively. These three outstanding scientists spent their most prolific years in the Biochemistry Institute. If they had not come to Turkey then, the progress made in biochemistry, today, could not have reached at this level. This review paper was written in order to remind and thank these distinguished scientists for their valuable contributions to medicine and biochemistry.
