What is it about?

.Spherical microresonators can be used as highly sensitive optical elements for the measurement of important physical quantities such as temperature or pressure. However, a demanding measurement technique is required using single resonators as sensor. This complicates the practical application of this technique. We present in this article a novel technique based on the use of a resonator array in place of a single resonator. Various physical quantities are measured to demonstrate the potential of this technique.

Why is it important?

The most attractive feature of the concept presented in this article is, that no precisely tunable laser is required. The sensor array is cheap and easy to manufacture. It can be used as disposable sensor

Perspectives

. It was already demonstrated by experiments on single resonators that functionalization of the resonator can be used for label-free detection of biological substances with extremely high sensitivity. The fabrication of resonator arrays with functionalized resonator has the potential for the development of on-site single use sensors for medical application.
