What is it about?

This paper highlights the phenomenon of the spatial modifications that occupants do in their houses without consulting architect or engineer. The energy demand is singled out before and after occupants' modifications. We have used two approaches, energy demand obtained from simulation, and edgy demand obtained from real energy end use.

Why is it important?

Our paper highlights the energy implications of the occupants' spatial modifications which are usually done in Algeria without any control and without consulting architects or engineers. There is an important energy saving which could be obtained if this kind of occupants' practice is controlled.

Perspectives

Based in our results, the occupants' spatial modifications in residential buildings have to be stopped and only permitted under control of architect or engineers to ensure that the energy demand will decrease instead of increasing.
