What is it about?
Russian politicians use quotations far more frequently than politicians in other countries. By doing so, they aim at various goals, such as: enhancing their arguments, discrediting their opponents, entertaining the audience, self-staging, etc. parliamentary debates offer ample evidence of this behaviour.

Why is it important?
Utilising quotes is one of many indirect communicative strategies available. It may prove ineffective if the hearer is unable to identify the source and/or to draw the conclusions intended by the current speaker, but it may also achieve many additional positive effects.
Perspectives
Due to their frequency and typological diversity, quotations in Russian parliament provide an optimal basis for exploring their functioning and efficacy in ongoing debates.
