Why is it important?
This paper aims to examine the formalization of translation, proposed by Alexander Ljudskanov, through the confrontation of his model with the Leipzig school’s modelling. While German scholars Kade and Neubert do not leave the field of Translationslinguistik, the Bulgarian one applies to implement semiotics of translation process. Starting from the premise that any information exists only as a code, he defines translation as a communicative exchange between two semiotic systems, which necessarily involves a cognitive semiotic mediation. Ljudskanov’s model requires decoding and encoding. Both phases involve the transformation of signs from one code to another in order to preserve the information carried by the message. The invariant information is transmitted by functional equivalents whose relevance and functioning principle will be illustrated through examples of proverbs, aphorisms and idioms with their translation in several languages.
Perspectives
La réflexion d’Alexandre Ljudskanov est bien entendu datée et partiellement dépassée. Aujourd’hui, la majorité de ses idées semblent obsolètes du point de vue de la cybernétique, de l’informatique et de la linguistique de corpus. Par contre, quelques-unes de ses conceptions concernant la nature sémiotique de la traduction n’ont pas perdu leur actualité : en particulier, ses tentatives pour mettre sur un pied d’égalité la traduction technique et littéraire ; enlever l’opposition traditionnelle de la traduction comme une activité linguistique non créatrice et de la traduction comme une activité littéraire créatrice ; élaborer un modèle universel ; affirmer la sélectivité et la visée comme caractéristiques générales de la traduction.
