What is it about?

This editorial looks at the dangers posed by vehicle emissions for the health and development of young children attending childcare centres sited on busy roads. It also discusses how commercial imperatives of for-profit property and service providers can drive decisions to locate childcare centres on busy thoroughfares, particularly where policymakers and regulatory bodies do not account for the hazards of vehicle pollution.

Why is it important?

Air pollution from vehicle emissions represent a significant danger to the short and long-term health and development of young children. This is particularly the case where children are spending much of their waking life in a location exposed to high levels of vehicle emissions. These dangers do not appear to be accounted for in many policy jurisdictions overseeing commercial-for-profit models of childcare provision.

Perspectives

I hope this article might lead to discussion and broader awareness of the importance of providing appropriate and safe locations for childcare services that avoid exposing children to dangerous sources of pollution that threaten their health and development.
