What is it about?
Bleaching is a complex treatment in paper conservation. In this study, we compare different bleaching agents with respect to their impact on molar mass, oxidized functionalities and color. We also included accelerated ageing to evaluate the long-term stability of the bleaching treatments.

Why is it important?
Paper conservators are often unsure if they should bleach artwork on paper. The unspecific action of the bleaching species on cellulose can lead to serious paper damage. In this study, we investigate typical bleaching agents and their impact on cellulose. We conclude that all bleaching agents in the concentrations tested are safe with respect to their impact on cellulose.
