What is it about?
The books were consigned for conservation in order to slow down and inhibit deterioration processes. In this study, standard methods and non-destructive instrumental techniques were applied for identification of the materials present in order to gain information on the state of preservation of the books. In this paper we will discuss our approach to the conservation treatment based on the results obtained.

Why is it important?
The books were created during the period when Europeans were just beginning to explore the new raw materials. Although the dating and place of manufacture of the books has not been contested before, the results of our study presented here add to the body of scientific knowledge of techniques and technologies of paper production in this period of transition to the industrial revolution in paper making.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. This article also lead to appreciations from my affiliation, contacting me and involving me in more events, activities connected to rare library materials and ultimately to a greater involvement in panel discussions.
