What is it about?

We focused on two aspects: 1) what are architectonical requirements of homes for older adults, and 2) which drivers influence their independent living. Literature review presents the overview of needs and solutions in home facilities for older adults as well as for people accompanying them, who live at the same place. We proved that physical exercises and lifelong learning (physical and mental health) have a huge impact on independet living, while economic situation did not have such influence in EU countries.

Why is it important?

Increasing number of older people, who live independently, will require specific places to live comfortably. Our research proves the need of creating real estates with facilities for older people, presented what kind of facilities might be included, and which drivers may influence future increase in independent living.

Perspectives

The increase demand for homes for older people is possible in countries where currently the level of independent living is the lowest: Latvia, Spain, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Poland. There is a need to focus in those countries on age-friendly facilities implementation at real estates, as the increasing number of older people may need it.
