What is it about?

In Germany Social Pharmacy is only rudimentary dealt in public health services of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is no subject of the academic pharmacy. Systematic research of social issues of drug therapy, on patient care process, on influence and importance of interests and on the impact of pharmacies and pharmacists in patient care is missing.

Why is it important?

The profession of pharmacists in Germany is underutilized, either for the improvement of medication safety or for providing primary care service. Social pharmacy as a subject to reflect the current situation and to improve the connectivity to the care structures would be important in the academic pharmacy.

Perspectives

I hope this article encourage reflection about how to tap the potential of pharmacy for drug delivery and how public health aims can be integrated into the thinking of pharmacists.
