What is it about?

While health promotion is a basic aspect of health literacy, medical expertise and procedures are beyond patient’s control. Patient safety concerns the quality of treatment as well as it’s outcome. Accordingly it is be asked for a specific safety-related competency in context of health literacy.

Why is it important?

Since success of medical treatment depends on patient’s participation it is necessary to close the gap between expert’s expertise and unprofessional expectations. While the term ‘health literacy’ focuses on various cultural practices it is argued why communication is an elementary competence to improve patient safety.

Perspectives

The considerations in this article shall be a contribution how patients can be involved in decisions and procedures that matter their existential interest in good and safe medical treatment.
