What is it about?

Winterhardy apple rootstocks have been obtained in Finland, and a trial was established in Latvia with 3 Finnish rootstocks - MTT1, MTT4 and MTT5, and 2 apple cultivars grown in Latvia - 'Auksis' and 'Gita'. Commonly grown rootstocks B.9 and MM106 were used for comparison. The dwarfing rootstock MTT4 was found to be the best of Finnish rootstocks. On this rootstock both cultivars produced the highest yields of good quality fruits. Even if there was no significant difference with trees on rootstock B.9, rootstock MTT4 is promising.

Why is it important?

Winterhardiness of apple rootstocks is very important in Northern Europe, where commonly used rootstock M9 is not hardy enough. Breeding of better rootstocks than the existing ones is going on in several countries, but new rootstocks must be tested in differrent locations and with different grafted cultivars. Our trial shows that MTT4 may be one such rootstock.

Perspectives

I hope that our research will create interest in this new apple rootstock, and tree nurseries outside Finland will start propagating and using it.
