The paper examines how writer´s awareness of his place in society as well as his desire to behave in conformity with cultural norms and his concern for the addressee´s face influence the choice of self-presentation, address forms and the address formula in Hittite.

Up to date, no systematic study of address and self-presentation terms from the point-of-view of deferential and strategic politeness in Hittite has been done. This paper attempts to fill the void.
