What is it about?
Appropriate risk assessment plays a fundamental role in geotechnical design. We have showna possible method of design risk mitigation, which follows recommendations included in Eurocode 7. The so-called “Observational Method” can produce savings in costs and programmes on engineering projects without compromising safety. The presented case study concerning design and build of heavy foundations proves the method to be successful.

Why is it important?
A designer is always responsible for the accuracy of the applied solution and has to account for potential risk. We show a variety of components that shall be analysed before choosing any geotechnical solution and recommend useful tools a geo-engineer shall consider.
Perspectives
We hope this article, showing the real case, can become a practical designer's guide.
