What is it about?

Research into written English indicates that non-finite clauses are used more with time. This paper considers the reasons for this developmental trend, deals with the syntactic functions of non-finite clauses and also reveals some differences between British and American English.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that when the research is diachronic, it is obvious that non-finite clauses are used more and more. The authors of books for advanced learners of English as well as teachers of English should be aware of this trend and pay careful attention not only to finite structures but also to non-finite ones.

Perspectives

I do hope this article will be interesting and useful for everybody who is interested in real language use and language change.
