What is it about?
In ancient philosophy, maternal (or female) causes are often described as passive, as mere substrates of the generative activities of the paternal causes. In the metaphysics of the Neoplatonic author Proclus, instead, maternal causes are active, generative principles which incite the unfolding of reality.
