Why is it important?
Negotiating who has the right to speak on what topic is part and parcel of everyday interaction. Recent linguistic research has described many cases where the distinction between exclusive access to knowledge by the speaker (or addressee) and shared access to knowledge is a grammatical one. This paper is the first in-depth description of such a grammatical distinction for an Australian language.
