What is it about?

A discussion of language units and how our language use shapes future language in ways similar to the theory of evolution.

Why is it important?

In 2005 Michael Hoey published a new theory of language that shapes the way we see language use and changes over time. This is the first paper that links that theory - lexical priming - to Darwin's work on evolution and Dawkins' concept of the meme.

Perspectives

In informal discussions about corpus linguistics and language usage more and more people seem to be saying that some unit of language must be operating like a meme. In this paper I discuss that idea in more detail.
