What is it about?
In computing and communications we can use electronics or photonics. Each has advantages and disadvantages. In-between these two areas lies the field of plasmonics - electrical charges excited by light on metal surfaces - that represent electrons coupled to photons. We review current developments in the field of plasmonics and how these might be applied to all-optical communications networks and computing, including advantages, disadvantages and future prospects.
