What is it about?

How religious freedom is explained in Islam's divine sources, the Quran and the traditions, sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad.

Why is it important?

Because there are so many misunderstandings on religious freedom and Islam - like that it is forbidden to change one's religion or belief or that Islam does not accept (religious) diversity. Too many prejudices and misguided interpretations produce a distorted picture of Islam. This distorted picture misinforms Muslims and non-Muslims alike, as well as elite and lay people from Western and non-Western societies. However, carefully reading and interpreting the divine sources of Islam shows how easy religious freedom is in accordance with liberal human rights.

Perspectives

Writing this article was so exciting; the findings and the rich insights fascinated me throughout the whole writing process. The most exciting moments were those, in which I was astonished by the huge amount of diversity within Islamic culture - and, in contrast, how simplistic it is usually depicted by the West. I hope some of my readers will have similar light bulb moments.
