Why is it important?

The findings has clearly shown the effect of plunge depth on the tensile strength, microhardness and microstructure of the joints produced through FSW. For producing sound quality welds plunge depth is significant. Plunge depth causes increase in the pressure below the shoulder surface and leads to sufficient forging action at the front of the tool. Too low plunge depth leads to inefficient movement of the stirred material around the pin thus resulting in surface groove. Too high plunge depth leads to excessive flash. Increased plunge depth upto certain level improves the consolidation of the deformed material and enhances the stirring and inter mingling of the material leading to improvement in strength

Perspectives

This experimental work is very useful for the mechanical engineers working in the the field of FSW as sufficient plunge depth is required for sound quality of the joints apart from other welding parameters.
