Why is it important?

As meaning is increasingly conveyed in multimodal ways in contemporary society, it is important to understand how meaning is expressed not only through verbal text but also visual images. This study contributes towards this understanding in the domain of English language textbooks used in China. Furthermore, our analysis has uncovered various ideological tensions, such as China's desire to strengthen local loyalties while promoting a global outlook. This gives readers an insight into the politics and practices of the education of English as a foreign language in a country with the largest number of such learners.

Perspectives

I hope this article demonstrates the importance of taking a multimodal perspective of how meaning is communicated in our society today.
