Academic Library Leaders’ Challenges, Difficulties and Skills: An Analysis of Common Experiences

What is it about?

Library leadership skills are indispensable in the twentyfirst century for academic library leaders, as many challenges can be amiably handled with skilful leadership. The results of the study identified communication skills as one of the major challenges and most needed leadership skills for modern library leaders. Library leaders typically believed that to be successful soft skills (communication, social interaction, team building) are needed more than other or technological skills.

Why is it important?

There is a vast body of literature available on leadership, traits and competencies in other professions, but literature on leadership from the perspective of library and information sciences is quite scarce. Therefore, this study will explore their perceptions regarding major challenges and the most difficult part(s) of being a library leader as well as the leadership skills needed to overcome these difficulties and challenges
