What is it about?

We explain how to find the center of a geographical unit. This center may be the center of population, but also the center of publications, or the center of received citations. We determine the center of publications of China, based on a local publication database. It is, moreover shown how this center moves over the years.

Why is it important?

We were the first to use barycenters on (Chinese) publication data.

Perspectives

In 1989 I was the first to introduce publication barycenters. Unfortunately the notion did not really catch on. This publication, using Chinese data, was an attempt to reach a wider audience.
