What is it about?
The article investigates Kant's conception of transcendental modalities. These are supposed to overcome Humean skepticism. However, the article demonstrates that these modalities are not sufficient for the claims of transcendental philosophy. Hegel identifies this problem and tries to solve it in his Science of Logic. Therefore, the article develops in its second part the main rationale of Hegel's treatment of modalities in the Logic of Essence.

Why is it important?
The article analyses the important issue of modalities for the development of theories in the period of classical german philosophy by investigating two main approaches by Kant and Hegel.
Perspectives
Philosophical explanation are essentially self-referential. This characteristic brings about some constraints on the theory of modalities. While Kant seems to neglect this characteristics, it seems to be Hegel's focus.
