A short but comprehensive review of "The lexis and lexicogrammar of Sri Lankan English" by Tobias Bernaisch, a synchronic corpus-based study which determines that Sri Lankan English should be regarded as a fully-fledged and independent South Asian variety of English.

Why is it important?
Bernaisch’s study moves beyond simply looking at borrowings from native languages as variety-defining features and deals with core vocabulary items that overlap with other Englishes from both the lexical and lexicogrammatical perspective. It is an excellent example of how corpus-driven investigations can provide empirical evidence that can make significant contributions to greater understanding of the evolution and diversity of Englishes around the world.
Perspectives
Being keenly interested in South Asian Englishes and corpus linguistics, I really enjoyed this well-written explication of Bernaisch's comprehensive and principled research. A great model for future investigations.
