Why is it important?
Although the gestational age at birth remains the strongest predictor of the survival and future health of the baby, the odds for the favorable outcome can be improved by the extent of perinatal and neonatal care provided.
Perspectives
Unfortunately, our ability to delay premature delivery is presently limited. Therefore it is necessary to search for possible ways to improve the outcome of the child once the preterm delivery is inevitable. Antenatal administration of corticosteroids to accelerate fetal maturity improves the outcome, while the delivery by cesarean section remains a question. The fate of a child born at the limits of viability is always uncertain and significantly differs between the centers. Analysis of the perinatal results allows the healthcare professionals to inform the parents about the prognosis of the newborn.
