What is it about?
The dollar-a-day method is dominant when it comes to estimate global poverty rates. However, strong criticism from acclaimed scholars necessitates the application of alternative method in global poverty measurement. The cost of basic needs approach is the main contestant of the dollar-a-day and this its first application on a global scale.

Why is it important?
Consistent measuring deprivation on a global scale is the first step in order to inform policies for action against- and reduction of- global poverty. Given the methodological problems of the dollar-a-day method, alternative investigations are the only possible course. This research addresses this by globally applying the classic and relevant cost of basic needs approach.
Perspectives
With all the data available it is a mystery why these cost of basic needs estimations have never been done before on a global scale. This approach offers a promising and consistent alternative to the dollar-a-day methodology applied by the World Bank. The Commission of Global Poverty, summoned by the World Bank, recommended that this approach must be used as an alternative global poverty indicator. The Bank however refused to do so, thus independent researchers should come to aid.
