What is it about?

More than fifty years of published articles in the Journal of Economics and Statistics are analyzed with textmining tools. This allows to identify relevant topics and their impact over time. The developments of topic relevance are contrasted with the development of economic key indicators. The goal is to find out whether the economic discourse leads or lags with regard to real economic developments.

We show how modern text mining methods can be used in the context of analyzing economic discourse. Furthermore, we show which trends affects economic research and to what extent trends in economic research provide signals about future developments.
