What is it about?

We have integrated the peer-review management system Open Journal Systems (OJS) with the online editor for academics Fidus Writer. Both are open source project and the combination creates an all-in-one system that cuts down on the time wasted on converting files and moving them between systems. In this article we describe the process and how the two systems are connected.

Why is it important?

Creating peer-reviewed texts is super-complicated currently. Texts are received as a Word file that is difficult to automatically convert, they are then being sent to editing services half-way around the world to get them into the right format and there are losses everytime. It's a nightmare for non-techies and a waste of time for IT professionals. With this project we finally take away most of the pain.

Perspectives

I have been working on text editing systems for academics for more than a decade. I really just needed to find a system that would permit my fellow anthropologists in writing articles for our journal without needing a ton of IT experience. With this integration we are finally getting this. This is really a big milestone.
