What is it about?
On a papyrus from Egypt dating to the 8th century an early hadith is preserved showing how Muslims in Egypt dealt on a daily basis with questions of religious rituals.

Why is it important?
The papyrus constitutes not only a very early preservation of this hadith - much older than most manuscripts - through the form it is recorded on the papyrus it also provides us with information on how the papyrus might have been used by Muslims in early Islamic Egypt.
Perspectives
In this article I use a literary religious tekst preserved on papyrus as a source for social history, namely to understand how Muslims in early Islamic Egypt experienced and experienced, practiced and discussed their religious rituals on a daily basis.
