What is it about?

Biologically available carbon is soil is important for microorganisms. We studied soil microbial activity in both agricultural and not exploited soils and try to relate it to carbon content in these soils. We would like to prove that carbon level in soil may be a measure of soil state - is it healthy or degraded.

Why is it important?

Nowadays many soils are severely exploited - over fertilized and intensely cultivated. As a result their microbial pool declining leading to lower soil quality. Finding a tool for the assessing soil quality will be very useful for soil managers and farmers helping them to chose the right way of soil usage.

Perspectives

This article is a part bigger study on soil microbial diversity in Polish soils (both arable and more natural) which was performed in collaboration between few research stations. The collaboration was fruitful and help to strengthen co-operation between our research group. We are proud to provide more insight into studying soil quality depending on their way of exploitation.
