What is it about?

Joking takes place based on the common ground existing between the joke teller and recipient. If there is no shared experience between the joke teller and recipients in terms of culture, language and situation, joking cannot be successful. The paper examines and specifies the shared experiences (or common ground) between the joke teller and recipients.

Why is it important?

By specifying common ground features in joking exchanges, the paper underscores the situational features that make jokes felicitous. These features are exemplified with stand-up comedy and applicable to other joking situations as well as studies situated in pragmatics, linguistics and discourse analysis.
