What is it about?

The zirconium alloys are applied in nuclear industry. The nuclear accidents result in a rapid oxidation and hydrogen degradation following water decomposition. The paper shows the effects of oxide layers on hydrogen absorption and hydrides` appearance for two Zr alloys.

Why is it important?

The presented research is important as the detailed mechanisms of oxide effects on hydrogen degradation can aid to develop new alloys more resistant to failure during nuclear accidents.

Perspectives

I am convinced that this paper may encourage the researchers to look for new Zr alloys and develop further international cooperation.
