What is it about?

Many thermomechanical pulp (TMP) mills worldwide are struggling financially due to decreasing demand for TMP pulp, so they need to reduce costs or diversify into new products to survive. Increasing the severity of the steaming stage prior to refining has potential to deliver hemicelluloses as a new product while at the same time reducing refining energy. However, very careful selection of the processing conditions is needed for the final pulp to be of acceptable quality. This paper identifies these conditions and the properties of the new hemicellulose byproduct.
