What is it about?
Compression wood has elevated levels of p-hydroxyphenyl units in its lignin. Analysis of thin slivers of juvenile (2-year-old) pine wood by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) was explored as a fast and highthroughput method to assess compression wood (CW) via the ratio of the p-hydroxyphenyl to guaiacyl units (H/Gratio).

Why is it important?
Chemical methods to detect H/G ratio are time consuming but Py-GC/MS offers a fast high-throughput method.
