What is it about?
Elodea canadensis, a freshwater aquatic macrophyte species of North American origin, which has invaded many countries throughout the world, had a history of contradictory reports from Greece. This paper presents the first confirmed report of the species from Greece and also the transboundary lake Great Prespa.

Why is it important?
Knowledge on current status of invasive species is an important prerequisite as a first step towards cost-effective management. Aquatic plants have a special importance among invasive organisms as they are easily transported through human activities and they can also be difficult to detect at an early stage of establishment.

Another record of Elodea canadensis was reported in mid-2017 from the village of Strymoniko, NE Greece by an amateur botanist. The locality belongs to a different water basin than the one reported by the present publication. To our knowledge, it has not been incorporated into a publication yet. Quite an interesting finding, which was communicated to us through a citizen science Facebook group.
