What is it about?

Low intensity farming systems and traditionally managed pastures grazed by local breeds, such as Greek water buffaloes, are important for the proper management of biodiversity and related ecosystem services in grasslands of the Lake Kerkini National Park. In this paper the daily distance travelled by buffaloes as well as their grazing-related activities (feeding, moving, wallowing, standing, ruminating, drinking, and lying) were recorded and discussed in relation to climatic condiitions, forage resources availability and farmers' breeding practices. Why is it important?

Grasslands of the Lake Kerkini National Park are over grazed as the 80% of the Greek water buffaloes' population is concentrated there. Data concerning the water buffaloes grazing behavior throughout the year are very rare.

Perspectives

It is an interesting detailed research work about the grazing behaviour of Greek Water buffaloes, an endangered-maintained local breed, on grasslands of the Lake Kerkini National Park
