What is it about?

Internet governnce is a very delicate issue, even in Western democracies. The diffuclty to balance different rights and freedoms and State interests is the main reason. China seems to have solved the problem b resorting to a strong State censorship, thus transforming the Internet into a gigantestic national intranet. The situation is even worse in the Xinjiang Uighur, where the Internet censorship is further implemented.

Why is it important?

The paper deals with a particular aspect of the Chinese Internet governance, which is usually neglected, namely the Internet in the special administrative region of Xinjiang Uighur. What is peculiar in this governance is the fact that we witness the compression of Internet freedoms bound together with the war on terror.

Perspectives

I hope this article calls for further studies on the compression of rights and freedoms in the Xinjiang Uighur, not just with respect to the Internet. The ethnic and religious discrimination, masked under the war on terror, convey a far greater infringements than the ones characterising the rest of China.
