What is it about?

We can find several symptoms of aridification (even signs of desertification) in Central and Eastern Europe. One of the most affected region is situated in the Danube-Tisza interfluve. In this Hungarian region we have discovered specific negative factors related to the climate change, land use, social and economical conflicts. Based on our findings we outline a possible regional pathway for a more sustainable rural development.

Why is it important?

We give a complex insight into the complex environmental problems and the related social and economic issues of a rural region. The main themes of our analysis are closely related to the aridification process. We highlight the deficiency of the agricultural sector, forestry and nature conservation which may be relevant in European context.

Perspectives

We've been working on this topic in this region for decades. As geographers, sociologist and regionalists, we're personally committed to the region's sustainability.
